The Jubilee of Mercy

The 2016 Holy Year in Rome

The St. Peter dome - Heart of the Jubilee of MercyThe Jubilee of Mercy is how Pope Francis called the extraordinary Jubilee of 2016 announced the 13th of March 2015 and which will begin the 8th of December of the same year. This date coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council that gave the ability to the Catholic Church to communicate its message to the entire world and open itself to every women and man of good will.

While Jubilees normally occur every 25 years and are scheduled far in advance, this one came as a surprise to everyone, as it was announced only a few months before its beginning. And so, from the 8th of December, pilgrims from around the world will peacefully make their way to the Eternal City to take part in the many religious festivities that will be organized.

What is a Jubilee?

The Swiss Guards at the Vatican entranceAs for every Jubilee, there is the forgiveness of the sins and the plenary indulgence for all those who pass through one of the Holy Doors; of course, only if they really feel and understand that their actions were bad and reprehensible. The Holy Year 2016 will end on the 20th of November, in coincidence with the Feast of Christ the King.

Indeed, a long series of events and religious ceremonies have already been planned for 2016. The first event, with a strong symbolic value, is one where pilgrims will be able to take part: the openings of the Holy Doors, one for each of the 4 Papal Basilicas in Rome (St. Peter in the Vatican area, St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major in the Monti area, St. Paul Outside the Walls). Since this is an extraordinary Holy Year, there will also be the opening of a 5th Holy Door of Charity. This one is opened for the first time in history, in the headquarter of the Caritas near the Termini central station.

Why the name “Jubilee of Mercy”?

In this period of great epochal changes, Pope Francis affirms that the Catholic Church and all its believers should more consciously spread God’s Mercy. It is an abstract concept that can be translated into a concrete one through some practical actions.

To become a protagonist of this Rome Jubilee, not only a beneficiary or a witness, means taking important actions: taking part of the pilgrimage, helping the poor, not judging but to give and to forgive, having an open heart to bring mercy and solidarity to all our brothers and sisters, to those less fortunate.
