Gelateria Fior di Luna in Trastevere

There are endless lists of the best gelaterie in Rome, and every resident you speak to will most definitely have a contradictory opinion on the subject. However, we can guarantee that Fior di Luna will more often than not be on everyone’s shortlist! An unassuming entrance just off Via della Lungaretta in Trastevere leads into a small and simply decorated shop that is far from the flashy, colourful gelato stops you’ll find clustered around the city’s tourist attractions. Here the gelato is understated and served unadorned in simple metal containers rather than being piled high and decorated with gaudy baubles, and it’s all the better for it.

You’ll find all the traditional favourites, including a richly flavoured cioccolato nero and a perfectly creamy stracciatella. However, our stand out flavours include marscapone, which has a hint of white chocolate and added biscuit to create a satisfying crunch, and some of the lighter fruit-based offerings. Our favourite among these is the delicate mirtillo, a more unusual flavour but one that is certainly worth a try. The small cups or coppette come in at 2.50 €, and you can choose to have whipped cream (panna) added for free, for an extra-indulgent treat.

Once you’ve decided on your flavours and treated yourself to either a cup or cone, make your way out of the shop and either turn left to stroll along the riverside in the direction of the Vatican, or turn right to head towards the main square in this neighbourhood, the Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, to sit by the central fountain and enjoy your frozen treat in the sun.

They also sell delicious speciality chocolate handmade, which makes a perfect Italian gift for friends or family back home!
